We are SOMA Builders, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded by girls for girls, dedicated
to empowering young women through learning and leading construction projects. The SOMA BuildHers team is led by teen girls and partners with
local contractor, Amy Straub, to build community projects, lead woodworking
workshops for women and kids, and learn the art and business of construction.

Our team has developed a close partnership with local non-profit Isaiah House located in East Orange, NJ. We have installed numerous closets within their transitional housing facilities and are collaborating to build and supply chests for families as they transition to permanent housing.

We host workshops for moms and kids to build power tool proficiency and basic construction skills. We have worked with and mentored local Girl Scout troops and have engaged with school aged children at community events such as Maker Madness and Maplewood Mayfest.

The construction industry is heavily dominated by men. As of 2024, only 12% of contractors are women. At SOMA BuildHers we are committed to providing women and girls with the resources, mentorship, and opportunities so they can thrive not only in the construction industry but in all facets of life.
